Converting a conventional shell and tube or multi-tube exchanger to axial flow of the heated gas removes the hot spot problem usually seen with electric heating and uses the same construction techniques with a simple change of the baffles. The tubes are used as the primary pressure and corrosion barrier for protection of the removable heated elements which are inserted in the tube. The heating elements are inserted through a secondary pressure barrier and the space is filled with a gas at lower pressure than the process. A pressure sensor gives warning of penetration of the primary barrier to warn against leaks.
